Mitsubishi takes into consideration the size and use of each vehicle in order to implement the most appropriate 4WD system. Pajero '03 Dakar Rally Pajero Super Select 4WD II The Super Select 4WD II system offers shift on-the-fly driving modes. Drivers can choose between Full-time 4WD (4H), composed of a Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) and center differential, Mitsubishi-Jeep full-fledged 4WD(4LLc), and rear-wheel 2WD(2H), which improves fuel economy and reduces noise. A smooth ride and reliable lever operation have been realized through an electronically operated shifting mechanism. Select Lever Description Layout 4H VCU/Center Differential-type Full-time 4WD handles a wide variety of roads, from normal to icy. By controlling power to the front and rear wheels based on road conditions, neutral turning performance is achieved during high-speed cornering and slippery road conditions. 4HLc Direct drive high-range 4WD locks the center differential to go the distance on sandy areas, deeply snowed streets, and rough roads. 4LLc Direct drive low-range 4WD covers rocky stretches and muddy areas and is effective in getting out of tight spots. 2H Rear-wheel 2WD disconnects drive from the front axle and brings fuel economy and noise under control. The Super Select 4WDII is available on the Pajero. Multi-select 4WD The Multi-select 4WD system strikes a balance between real 4WD driving and 2WD fuel economy performance by controlling torque distributed from an electronically controlled coupling. A single button allows drivers to select one of three optimum driving modes according to current driving conditions. Description 4WD Mode Power is distributed appropriately to the front and rear wheels improving driving stability according to road surface and driving conditions. LOCK Mode The ultimate mode for rough road driving, when stuck, or during tough low-speed operation. 2WD Mode This mode disconnects drive to the rear wheels and is more fuel-efficient. 2WD and 4WD Stability Comparison Multi-select 4WD Mechanism Grandis Full-time 4WD System The Full-time 4WD System offers sporty feel on road with handling diversity off road. This 4WD system is the same full-time 4WD system on the Lancer Evolution VII with a center differential having a viscous LSD. The center differential consistently distributes the appropriate engine torque to the front and rear wheels (front 50 : back 50). When wheel slip is detected, torque is automatically distributed according to the difference in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels, assuring excellent performance under a variety of road surface and driving conditions.
