Mitsubishi Outlander From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation , search For the vehicle known in North America as the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, see Mitsubishi RVR . Mitsubishi Outlander Manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors Also called Mitsubishi Airtrek (2001–05) Production 2001–present Class Crossover Body style(s) 4-door SUV Layout Front engine , front- / four-wheel drive Designer Olivier Boulay (Outlander) The Mitsubishi Outlander is a crossover manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors . It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek when it was introduced in Japan in 2001, and was based on the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Auto Show . The ASX (Active Sports Crossover) represented Mitsubishi's approach to the industry wide XUV trend for retaining the all-season and off-road abilities offered by a high ground clearance and four-wheel drive , while still offering car-like levels of emissions, economy and size. [ 1 ] The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle’s ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", [ 2 ] and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." [ 3 ] The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure." [ 2 ] The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2005 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform , and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroën . PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 , which are manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the Outlander. It offered a choice of either a 126 PS (93 kW) 4G63 2.0  L or a 139 PS (102 kW) 4G64 2.4 L GDI , mated to a standard INVECS-II 4-speed semi-automatic transmission . Both front- and four-wheel drive were available. The four-wheel drive version uses open differentials for the front and rear axles , with a viscous coupling unit for the center differential. A high performance model, using a detuned version of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 's 4G63T 2.0 L turbo , was introduced in 2002. [ 5 ] The engine produced 240 PS (180 kW) and 343 N·m (253 lb·ft), although in export markets the Outlander version's output was reduced to 202 PS (149 kW) and 303 N·m (223 lb·ft). The Outlander arrived in 2003, with a modified front grille and headlights which increased the overall length by approximately 130 millimetres (5.1 in), and the two models were manufactured in parallel thereafter. A version of the 4G64 powerplant was offered first, while a 4G69 2.4  L SOHC MIVEC I4 producing 120 kW (160 PS) and 220 N·m (160 lb·ft), and the turbocharged 4G63T appeared in 2004. All had the option of front- or four-wheel drive . In several South American markets it was known as the Montero Outlander , to benefit from an association with the strong-selling Mitsubishi Montero Sport . 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander (Canada) [ edit ] Second generation Second generation Production 2005–present Assembly Okazaki, Aichi , Japan Kurashiki, Okayama , Japan , Born , Netherlands (European market) Laem Chabang , Thailand (for Singapore market only) Platform Mitsubishi GS platform Engine(s) 4B12 2.4 L DOHC MIVEC I4 6B31 3.0 L SOHC MIVEC V6 VW 2.0 L TDI PSA 2.2 L HDiTDI 4N14 2.3 L Di-D MIVEC Transmission(s) 5-speed manual 6-speed manual 6-speed INVECS-III semi-auto 6-speed twin-clutch transmission Wheelbase 2,670 mm (105.1 in) 2008-09 (International)): 2,830 mm (111.4 in) Length 2006-07 (International)/2007-09 (US/Canada): 4,640 mm (182.7 in) 2008-09 (International): 4,765 mm (187.6 in) 2010- (International): 4,665 mm (183.7 in) Width 1,800 mm (70.9 in) 2008-09 (International): 1,795 mm (70.7 in) Height 2006-07 (International)/2007-09 (US/Canada): 1,680 mm (66.1 in) 2008-09 (International): 1,655 mm (65.2 in) 2010-: 1,720 mm (67.7 in) Curb weight 1,600–1,720 kg (3,500–3,800 lb) Related Mitsubishi Lancer Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Mitsubishi Racing Outlander Citroen C-Crosser Peugeot 4007 On October 17, 2005, Mitsubishi launched the second generation model, dropping the Airtrek in Japan in favour of adopting the global name. [ 6 ] It features a new DOHC 2.4 L 16-valve MIVEC engine; INVECS-III continuously variable transmission (CVT), Mitsubishi's AWC system which features electronically controlled four wheel drive and stability control, on a stretched Mitsubishi GS platform . The North American version, powered by a newly designed 6B31 3.0 L V6 SOHC MIVEC was shown in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show prior to its release in October the same year. The Outlander, which features Mitsubishi's RISE safety body, received a four star rating from the Euro NCAP car safety performance assessment programme. [ 7 ] In Chile, where both generations were on sale simultaneously, the new model was badged Outlander K2 . In its home market of Japan it was the best-selling SUV from October 2005 to March 2006, [ 8 ] while in the U.S. market it achieved 1,694 and 2,108 sales in November and December 2006, the first two full months it was available; [ 9 ] [ 10 ] Mitsubishi ultimately hopes for at least 4,000 sales per month in the United States. [ 11 ] Facelifted European Outlander 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT (US) Increased demand for the new Mitsubishi Lancer , and the consequent effects on the capacity of the company's Mizushima production facility, have obliged Mitsubishi to reassess production of the Outlander. In September 2007, they announced that from 2008, production of European market Outlanders would be transferred from Nagoya to its NedCar plant in the Netherlands, while the Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 would have their production transferred from Mizushima to Nagoya. [ 12 ] The model was facelifted for the 2008 model year, although the 2007 grille carried over in the United States and Canada for 2008-09 until another facelift in the 2010 model year. At the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas , the company displayed a Mitsubishi Evolander (now known as Mitsubishi Outlander Ralliart ) concept, powered by a 240 kW (330 PS) supercharged version of the vehicle's 6B31 V6 engine and equipped with suitably uprated suspension , brakes , wheels/tires, body kit and interior. [ 13 ] A second show car, an Outlander GT Prototype with a front grille based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X , was exhibited at the 2009 New York International Auto Show , [ 14 ] and formed the basis of the facelifted model introduced in late 2009. [ 15 ] . Along with a major facelift for the 2010 model year, the top end Outlander XLS (GT in the US) introduced a new colour MFD dashboard display and the Mitsubishi S-AWC AWD system. The lower trims retain the previous MFD and the less advanced AWC AWD system. Likewise, the interior was also slightly revised to incorporate leather into the dashboard trim and doors. Car Reviews : evo Car Reviews Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo-R Rating: Don't judge a box by its cover; this MPV's got the heart of an Evo VII By Jethro Bovingdon/Andy Morgan January 2003 If you've ever driven a Mitsubishi Evo VII you'll know that it's as brutal and intoxicating as any road car money can buy. There's no concession to comfort and an almost clinical, obsessive focus on going as quickly as possible above all else. The Evo makes you drive faster than you would in other cars but at the same time engages you on a personal level - goading you mercilessly until you give it all of your attention and start working to its agenda. If you're not committed it sulks and you feel like a wimp, and when you do give in and push the Evo anywhere near its limits your licence is in grave danger. People who buy them must be very strong-willed or have no regard for the law whatsoever. The problem is that the Evo is so hardcore it's bound to alienate plenty of potential owners. People who love the idea of big turbocharged power when they're on their own, but have a family to think about. People who wouldn't dare subject their loved ones to the vomit-inducing rollercoaster that is the rear seat of an Evo VII. That's where the rather ungainly-looking Airtrek Turbo-R, imported by Mitsubishi gurus Xtreme Autos comes in. It's practical, obviously, but under that bulbous body lays the heart of an Evo VII. For starters there's that same rather anodyne-sounding 4G63 four-cylinder turbo engine channelling its power through a four-wheel-drive system based on that of the Evo. Power is down to 237bhp but the peak torque figure of 253lb ft is produced at a lowly 2500rpm. Unfortunately it's not available as a manual but it borrows the effective five-speed auto from the Evo VII GTA. So it's a practical family five-seater, complete with generous boot, great visibility and turbo-nutter engine. All for ΂£22,995. The question is, can it meld the seemingly incompatible goals of convincing family wagon and hardcore all-wheel-drive thrill seeker? The Airtrek's only real competition can be found, rather predictably, in Subaru showrooms. We're big fans of the new Forester XT but with only 177hp and a pricetag of ΂£21,500 you'd have to put the Airtrek ahead on paper. But it's on the road that the Forester puts up a stronger fight - it's an absolute hoot to drive and a tough benchmark for the Airtrek. If you can't see the appeal of these rally-replica-on-stilts vehicles just imagine a car with 70 per cent of the poise of the genuine article and only 50 per cent of the grip. Getting the picture? The Turbo-R's interior is certainly a step-up from the downmarket Evo. Audi won't be benchmarking it for tips on quality or style, but nevertheless it's no bad place to be and the flashes of ebony-style trim look and feel quite classy. There are steering-wheel mounted shift buttons that rock in both directions so that up and down changes can be executed by either hand, but the movement lacks the precision feel you'd like considering the mechanical nature of the change. This is one aggressive auto - it will swap ratios seamlessly on part-throttle but feels happier banging home the shifts with the ferocity of an F1-style semi-auto. It's this hard-edged character that defines the Airtrek. Kickdown is breathtaking. Literally. With the throttle pinned to the carpet there's a momentary pause, an almighty bang and then you're thrown down the road with almost comical thrust. It's in the mid-range that the Turbo-R really flies. A trip to the rev-limiter (set at over 7000rpm) is a bit pointless - change up at 5500rpm and you're straight back in to the fattest part of the torque belt. And the real joy is just how unexpected the acceleration is to those around you. Other road users can't come to terms with the Airtrek's unlikely performance. Corners are despatched with almost as much disdain as straights. There is body roll, of course, but the Airtrek never strays too far from your chosen path. It's essentially very neutral but understeer can be provoked if you're right in the meat of the turbo's force. Two inside spinning wheels means you're pushing especially hard and with a provocative mid-corner lift the big Airtrek can be made to slide neatly with just a hint of oversteer. Overall it's great fun and never feels too soft or wallowy despite its lofty stance. It's no Evo VII but offers plenty of thrills per mile. The real dynamic weak link is the steering which is extremely vague around the straight-ahead and never weights up even under heavy loads. So while the Airtrek's physical dimensions and slightly softer set-up mean a well-driven Evo or Impreza would leave it for dead, there's no doubt that the oddball Mitsubishi is highly focused on the driver having a good time. In fact, that could be its downfall. Its power delivery is so uncompromising and the grippy, neutral handling so enticing that you can't help but drive it like... well, like it's an Evo VII. Which means you'll still lose your licence and your family will be subjected to tediously regular bouts of travel sickness. A Scooby Forester can't match its performance but is probably the better resolved package. evo magazine.Click here and get 3 issues for just £1!">Click here and get 3 issues for just £1!
