It uses a metal folding roof which means it's refined at higher speeds and gives it added security. The downside is that while the CZC looks good with the roof folded, it appears awkward with it in place and lacks the style of many other small drop tops. Inside it's pretty roomy up front, but as with many cars this size, the rear seats are pretty useless. There are two engines available including a zippy turbocharged version with 150bhp but the standard 1.5-litre offers decent performance and respectable economy. But that was before they had to engineer a hard top and a boot it would fold into. So it shares the sort of cab-forward big rump look of the 307CC and from the side with the top up looks distinctly dumpy. But unclip the roof locks, pull the button on the door handle, and it transforms itself from a plumpkin into a cute little cabrio. It still isn’t ‘drop-head gorgeous’, but, like Page 3 of The Sun, it looks a lot better topless. Top up, in the rain that greeted us for our test, it feels like a very solid little thing. The version with TURBO emblazoned in large chrome letters on its rump shares the same fairly heavy steering of the CZT hatchback. This is an advantage on the motorway (even allowing you to drive ‘hands off’ for a while if you want to) and you can build as much muscle on the way to the gym as you can pumping iron once you get there. It also passed the Erin Baker fingers test, by which you poke your fingers into the bottom of the door-shut to see how much the body flexes. (This can be painful but it wasn’t on the Colt.) The engine is smooth and torquey with no turbo lag, a bit like a smaller version of VAG’s 2.0TFSI. And, top-up, the handling is grippy and predictable. Drop the top, though, and with nothing holding the top of the car together it’s not quite the same. The scuttle shakes through the steering wheel and the ends of your fingers do start to get bruised in the door shuts. It’s not bad. Certainly no worse than the average folding tin top. But it isn’t the rock solid little racer it feels with the top up. An advantage of its big bum (let’s not mess around trying to be politically correct) is the amount of stuff you can shove inside it. There’s enough room in there for a lady’s luggage. Or the roof. But not both. Which actually makes a lot of sense because you don’t want the top down on the autoroute to the South of France anyway. You want it up with the a/c on, or your teeth will fill with bugs and your hair with hydrocarbons. If you’re prepared to squash yourself up like a gnome you can actually get four of you into the car for short distances. Which is okay, too. Three of you can drink and the other can’t. The non TURBO 1.5 is altogether softer and more feminine. Mainly, the steering is much lighter, the power is a lot less and the insurance drops all of seven groups down to 8E. Mitsubishi reckons the car’s main market is women aged 30 to 60. Pretty much the same market as the Peugeot 206CC and the Vauxhall Tigra. That’s okay. If all of them bought 206Ccs it would be a bit like them all buying the same outfits at Marks & Spencers then turning up at the same event in them. At least the boot of the Colt CZC allows for plenty of changes of clothes. And the turbo has a sweet engine under its bonnet. Car of the Year 2006 Mitsubishi's new Colt CZC convertible will cost from £13,999 when it goes on sale in April. The Colt CZC uses an electrically-folding metal roof similar to this in the Peugeot 206 CC, Nissan Micra C+C and Vauxhall Tigra. The cheaper model in the two-car range uses a 107bhp 1.5-litre engine, while a turbocharger boosts this to 147bhp in the £15,999 CZC Turbo. The entry-level car has a 0-62mph time of 10.5sec, top speed of 114mph and combined fuel consumption of 42.8mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions of 157g/km earn it a place in the 18% company car tax band. The CZC Turbo sprints to 62mph in 8.4sec, tops 126mph and returns 39.8mpg. A higher carbon dioxide output puts it in the 20% company car tax band. Standard equipment for both models includes four airbags, air-conditioning, alloy wheels, MP3 CD stereo and front fog lights. The Turbo has stability and traction control, part leather seats, a more aggressive-looking front bumper and different alloy wheels. Its roof is well designed and handling agile, but ride, and material finish let it down. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £10,099 - £9,599 For : Performance, sharp steering, modern interior design, value pricing, rear seats boost versatility Against : Ungainly looks, cheap finish, more scuttle shake, costly servicing Driving The driving experience is pleasant; as with the standard car, the CZC has a relatively sharp turn-in and accurate handling. Unfortunately, the loss of the roof can be felt, as there is some twist and vibration through the body. This is particularly apparent around the large windscreen, where the scuttle shake over uneven surfaces really shows up. The ride itself is also fidgety at low seed, and although the CZC feels sportily agile, there's a fair amount of body roll through corners. A choice of engines supply decent power even in base 1.5-litre guise - but the rorty 1.5-litre turbo version is a proper 'warm CC', with the most power of any rival and pleasing surge to make fast motoring relatively straightforward. The gearchange is also quick and slick. Marketplace Designed and developed with Italian styling house Pininfarina, the new car unfortunately isn't that pretty with the top up. Steeply-raked A-pillars seem out of place, as the high roof of the standard car has been replaced by a lower folding roof; viewed in profile, you see an ungainly jigsaw of shapes. On the top is down, however, the lines improve and the undisturbed, pillarless look is neat. Just the two models are offered - not-turbo and turbo - with simple, clear pricing and few options. Rivals come from various sources as the small CC sector grows. Peugeot started it all off with the 206 CC but it's now joined by the Micra CC, Vauxhall Tigra and, though it's not a CC, the Citroen C3 Pluriel. Owning The Mitsubishi doesn't feel as well built as, say, a Vauxhall Tigra, and panel gaps could be tighter. The roof mechanism is simple though; release two catches and let the electrics do their work. However, folding the top means you lose out on boot capacity. With a 171-litre capacity, the CZC is tight for space. Oh, and while the Colt does have rear seats, they are so tight they are only any use as an additional luggage area. And while the dimpled finish to the top of the dash, translucent plastics and textured rotary dials give a modern look, it doesn't quite feel special enough and material quality could be better. 12,500-mile service intervals are short too, and costs very high compared to the competition, while the 1.5-litre engine isn't as economical as rivals. But retained values are OK and insurance ratings not too excessive.
