I dress in a wet-suit and play the bagpipes in Kingston market on Saturday afternoons merely to satisfy a couple of personal whims, not to draw a crowd. But my anonymity was recently required to take a back seat, thanks to Mitsubishi who sent me the sexiest little crowd-puller since Kylie Minogue got physical. A rival to the seminal Peugeot 206 GTi and the latest Fiesta ST, the Colt CZT exemplifies the hot-hatch tradition and brings to the sector a sweet little turbo-charged engine, and looks that eclipse these established favourites. A slightly re-mapped version of the Mitsubishi CZT engine can also be found in the smart Brabus forfour, both cars being built at Mitsubishi's NedCar plant in Holland - once owned by Volvo, and late home of the CVT Daf (aka Volvo 66). Developing 147 bhp and 210 Nm at a usefully low 3500 rpm, the CZT's turbo-charged and intercooled engine is man enough to deliver a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds, and a top speed of 131 mph. This performance will see off a regular 2.0-litre 206 GTi and seriously challenge the more powerful 206 GTi 180. The 2.0-litre Fiesta ST is also slower off the mark (just) and marginally loses out on the (let's face it, theoretical) top speed. And to cap it all, the CZT, at £12,999, is the cheapest of the lot. The similarly priced SEAT Ibiza FR offers no notable challenge, except at the top end, where it is slightly faster. ...the Colt CZT exemplifies the hot-hatch tradition... Mitsubishi is no stranger to performance vehicles: witness the Evo lX and a string of rally successes, not to mention the late, lamented GTO. So when all this expertise is focused on a penny packet street racer you can expect something special. Not just from the engine, but from the whole dynamic package, which deserves some exploration. But first, let's take a closer look at the engine. Developed exclusively for Europe from an existing powerplant, the 1.5-litre engine employs Mitsubishi's so called 'MIVEC' technology, which enables variable valve-timing for an optimum combination of torque and horsepower. Fast it may be, but not at the expense of flexibility, which is exhibited in easy peasy driveability when traffic conditions and urban speed limits throttle any chance to exploit the performance. The hint of things to come, however, is latent in the short throw of the five-speed GETRAG 'box, which the CZT shares with the compression-ignition Colt. Technophiles might care to note that the engine has a hollow camshaft, low-friction pistons, and something called a cylinder-block baffle plate, which aids engine output whilst reducing internal losses due to oil friction. But if all this techno-guff leaves you cold, you would nonetheless warm to the dynamics of this car, which seems to have been engineered to remind us what hot-hatches are supposed to feel like. The road ahead is not some grey strip negotiated with all the tactile feedback of a video game, but rather something that shares its undulating secrets with you and the car, in a manner that would not disgrace a two-seater sports car.
