Other reviews I've seen say that there is little advantage in going for the 1.3 litre 4 cylinder in terms ......no speed demon but still performs solidly on the motorway, with a lot less of the buffeting from crosswinds I would have expected on such a light, tall car. At 6 ft I have no need to move the seat far back for a comfortable driving position; and even with the sunroof, there's still a large gap to the headlining! Rear passenger space is also good and the seats apparently slide back and forth or can be removed altogether (though I haven't tried this ... more A huge leap forward from its predecessor in every respect, the 'new' shape Colt is a fine vehicle for those looking to find a Honda Jazz-type car without the associated cost. Probably �2-3000 cheaper than a Jazz at the same age due to its poor depreciation performance, you still get most of the advantages of the Honda (apart from the brilliant CVT). The seating isn't so clever but you can still remove the rear seats for a useful load bay. Otherwise the boot is tiny, though it has a small underfloor 'secret' cubby hole and an electric socket to make up.I personally prefer the Colt's looks to the Jazz, it appears wider and more purposeful, with a modern shape that won't age too quickly (hopefully). Its proportions are elegant to my eye but it has to be said that the A-pillar obscures vision quite severely, something to be aware of when exiting roundabouts that have pedestrian crossings... The rear pillars are also quite thick but don't pose the same problem thanks to the large wing mirrors.The car is significantly wider than our old Corsa and even though the wing mirrors fold, it's a tight squeeze to fit in the car port/garage.The specification is actually superior to its later incarnation (CZ2 I believe) and for the price, air-con, electric sunroof, mirrors and windows (all round), metallic paint and alloys appears pretty generous. The instrument panel is very conventional (I prefer the Toyota Yaris' digital one); but there is also a small binnacle at the base of the windscreen which displays information for radio, temperature and trip computer.Speaking of the windscreen, it is incredibly large: the air-con is definitely a must on a hot day as the sun heats up the car quite rapidly due to the large glass area. Handling seems tidy and safe: how much this is due to the 'wheel at each corner' design I'm not sure. But it feels squat and purposeful and at ease on both urban roads and motorways.Most surprising of all is that little 'Mitzi', as we have taken to call him - I mean it - :-) has a certain charm all its own. I don't usually approve of anthropomorphism but I can't help imbuing Mitzi with positive human characteristics: friendliness, warmth, reliability and loyalty, among others. So if you're in the market for a car that you will use for years then this is definitely one you should consider (we also checked out the Yaris, Fiat's Punto and Panda, Nissan's Micra and others). If depreciation is an issue (and you want an excellent semi-auto - the Colt's one isn't so good, that's why we went for a manual), then the Honda Jazz may be a better bet. But having also test driven the latter, things like the blandness of the interior put me off. The Colt doesn't actually have an amazingly different one, but the colours and textures seem more attractive to me - the instrument/control lighting at night is also both soothing and effective. You'd expect a bulky "crossover" 4x4 with very wide tyres to sound rackety on coarse-grained tarmac, but on its Yokohama Geolandars, with their unexaggerated tread pattern, the Outlander is as quiet as most saloons.   Mitsubishi uses words like robust and aggressive to describe the styling, and that's fair enough. I don't much like the front-end appearance, but there's no doubt that, especially with the standard roof rails, the Outlander looks ready to tackle quite rugged going, with a high stance and all-wheel drive.   This is where it's worth bearing in mind that, as with the Subaru Forester, the Outlander is based, not on a dedicated off-roader platform, but on a modified version of the one used for the Evo VIII.   Taking all that into account, the Outlander occupies a rather difficult-to-describe estate/off-roader niche, but I propose to avoid any philosophical arguments of the "What exactly is this car?" variety by saying that if this is the kind of car you need or prefer, then the Mitsubishi seems to me to be one of the best, and the company has, after all, being doing crossovers of various kinds since models like the original Space Wagon back in the mid-1980s. Having now covered additional miles on roads which were much more varied than the ones around the original launch exercise base, I'm quite surprised at how pleasant it is to drive briskly, which is not the same as saying on the limit. There's very good traction, of course, and while you can't expect anything like Evo VIII cornering from a car of this weight and height - there's a certain amount of body lean to take into account too - I thought there was a smoothness and ease to its handling which you don't get in the general run of 4x4s.
