The steering is to the point, the seating space available, humongous and boot space is more than big enough. The air conditioning is so good you could probably use the car as an expensive fridge and style throughout oozes class without going over the top. The Galant looks sharp and so much different to European cars. The electronics that go on throughout the car make it work as efficiently and economically as possible while still giving a business class drive. There is good enough torque throughout and you can really get a good push by leaving that gear changing a little late.The Mitsubishi that I have has a full on Clarion system; a criminal beating Cobra alarm set up and is packed with safety features. The steering is to the point, the seating space available, humongous and boot space is more than big enough. The air conditioning is so good you could probably use the car as an expensive fridge and style throughout oozes class without going over the top. All around viewing is positive and the Galant seems to have quite a small turning circle for its size.Buying this Mitsubishi would make an overall good investment. We actually have the sport estate version. It has a fantastic body kit on it not to wild but very sophisticated . The interior is very nice, incredibly comfy for long journeys with the sporty look carrying on inside it has a momo steering wheel like in a lotus ellise with a colored speed guage that lights up when the engine is turned on in a high vilocity red. Definatly one of the best looking estates of its time and still ......Moving on to the 2.0 litre engine shame that with the petrol price rising it has become quite expensive to fill up but it does get you of the lights very quickly the speedo goes up very quickly. It got of the lights faster than a Mustang but unfortunatly it coudnt keep it up the pure power of the mustang was emmence also we only went up to the speed limit (cough) This is our seccond galant as it was such a shame when the other one died we bought ... This car was big and comfortable you could sit 4 6 footers in this car and drive forever.Myself and 2 colleagues with 3 sets of clothes for a fortnight and all our tools travelled over to Dusseldorf from leeds via Dover/Calais with absolutely no complaints about comfort. It had loads of power and would lug loads around without any groans although an average MPG ......driving but as I found out during the fuel blockades this can be stretched well into the 30's if you like travelling at 56 without accelerating. Mine was a 99 on a T plate and did not have aircon and they are like goldfish bowls so summer motoring could get extremely hot.However it did have electric everything so it was sunroof open and all four windows down with only using your finger! Well, for a compact 4x4 it was pretty good, although after a while you begin to realise that, in the metal, it's a lot more abrupt in its rear end styling than carefully angled photographs suggest. That's the three-door as tested. There's a five-door version coming in the autumn. What follows on from the dimensions of the short-wheelbase three-door model is that there isn't much rear seat passenger legroom (excellent headroom all round, though) and there's even less space for luggage. That almost certainly doesn't matter in the Pinin's target market. It will often be bought as a two-up, or parent with children on the school run, kind of machine, which can be used for hobby trips at the weekend. But it's stylish enough to be bought by youngish single persons of the gender which contributes to "The Other Half" columns elsewhere in CARkeys. Unlike some similarly sized 4x4s, the Pinin is an agile town car, easy to park. It stomps on, out in the country, when you rev the GDI engine beyond its lean-burn mode. There's as much rough-terrain capability as most people will need. And the combination of a proper 4WD system with high but not exaggerated ground clearance is what country dwellers want in an all-year-round car which might have to cope with snow and ice in winter, and with mud almost any time. There are some neat details on this Italian-built 4x4, with its combination of Mitsubishi and Pininfarina styling. Something which particularly impressed me was the fact that, although the spare wheel is externally mounted on the tailgate, it doesn't obscure the road behind, as seen in the rear view mirror. There's a cutaway top to the rear bumper, into which the spare wheel nestles. One little niggle was the fact that the driver's seat adjustment lever in the top of the range GLS test car constantly caught in the bottom of my trouser leg as I got in and out. Have I missed something, and are bell bottoms out of fashion? Like most 4x4s, the Pinin has massive door mirrors, and there's also a wide-sweep rear wiper, which gives a good view of the kerb side, and not such a good view of the overtaking lane behind. That should be adjusted. I got to like the car a lot, despite the fact that having whiskers, not living out in the wilds, and being well beyond the age of discretion, I am by no means in the Pinin's intended market sector. The GLS isn't cheap, but the entry level model can be had for £3000 less. Price: £16,995 Capacity: 1834cc Power: 118bhp Maximum speed: 104mph 0-62mph: 10.2 seconds Economy: 36.2mpg extra urban, 31.4mpg combined Insurance: Group 11 Mitsubishi figures. Second opinion: Is it just me? Mitsubishi spent millions on the research and development of its GDI engine technology, which promised diesel-like frugality in lean-burn mode and spirited performance when the salary cheque comes in. When I drove the Carisma with the same 1.8 engine I couldn't match the mpg claims of colleagues, but thought little of it. Now it's happened again. The best I could get out of the Pinin in two-wheel drive mode, at an average 36mph, was 42.9mpg. Otherwise, the average was nearer 30 mpg. Are my expectations to high or Mitsubishi's claims too excessive? It's displacement is 2.5 litres rather than 3.2 litres, but the advanced design means it is much more powerful The Mistusbishi Triton ute has been around for a while, but has now had some changes, the most important of which is the new 2.5 litre turbodiesel engine. More Powerful Engine for Mitsubishi Triton Mitsubishi says the engine produces 11 percent more power and 15 percent more torque than the previous 3.2 litre diesel engine. Mistubishi also claims class-leading power and torque of 133kW (178hp) and 407Nm (300 lb ft) respectively with the manual versions of the 4WD Triton, but the NZ$54,990 five-speed automatic GLS tested here has a lower torque level of 356Nm, with a claimed fuel consumption of 9.3L/100km (25.29mpg). Mitsubishi Super Select Four Wheel Drive System The GLS double cab ute has Mitsubishi’s Super Select four wheel drive system, which allows drivers to engage 4WD at speeds up to 100km/h. These features, combined with multi-mode ABS with EBD and active stability and traction control, combine to produce Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology (MATT), a four wheel drive system similar to that of the Pajero. Larger Tray for Mitsubishi Triton The Triton also gains active stability control and side and curtain airbags. The wellside has been extended by 180mm and deepened by 55mm. The changes have not overtly modified the shape of the Mitsubishi Triton, which is considered by many to be controversial in its styling. Despite looking as if there would be little room in the rear seats due to the cab rear wall that slopes forwards as it drops only eats into space under the rear seats, so the interior space is comparable with other utes in the class. The Super Select 4WD system is easy to use, but the lever has a notchy action and can too easily be pushed too far forwards, locking the centre differential, which is not recomended on tarmac. The main difference between this four wheel drive system and those in many other utes in the market is that while they have to remain two wheel drive while on the road due to automatically locking centre differentials, Mitsubishi’s system can be activated for wet or sliperry conditions. New Engine has Plenty of Throttle Lag The steering is quite direct for a ute, and the vehicle handles quite well on the road, although the ride quality is a little ‘floaty’, the vehicle bouncing over undulations in the road. The engine produces masses of power, but there is one downside. Throttle response from rest is very slack, and it takes some time for the power to arrive, which makes it hard to drive when pulling out from intersections. It is a boon off road though, because that same lag means that the risk of wheel spinning under too much sudden power is virtually eliminated. Apart from the new engine, Mitsubishi has made slight improvements to the vehicle. It is still not the best ute on the market, but it is reasonably easy to live with. Copyright Sam Domett.
