I had one of the last,new shape GTOs imported from Japan,an as new 1998 model with 6000 miles only,a one year old car when I bought it.It was the top spec MR model,18" chrome alloys,bright red,black leather,4wd,4ws,6 speed manual it cost thousands less than a UK main dealer car and looked a million dollars.Unlike the more common UK models it had the same open lights upfront not pop up,different large 18" chrome alloys and a fixed rear spoiler similar to the Toyota Supra,but lower, a little different from the UK model,it was the latest shape and Mitsubishi UK never had these to sell.The wheels were unique Mitsubishi Japan Chrome alloy,very expensive and only found on the Japanese top MR model,people kept asking me what is it? A real head turner and a superb very safe performer with supercar looks.It was very sure footed in all weathers rain or shine,the 4wd system with its rear wheel drive bias,kept it bolted to the road and the 4ws helped it corner like on rails turning the rear wheels in slightly when cornering,only driving like a real idiot could upset its handling,only then would it show understeer.This is when the front end lets go when accelerating into a corner and you plough straight on off the road.On the other hand a car that tends to oversteer lets go at the back first,tail sliding fun!It always felt a bit wide and heavy compared with the Supra I also owned,almost 6 ft wide and thats as big as an XJS Jaguar,a little slower maybe than the Supra but felt ultra safe.In the wet the Supra had oversteer in bucket loads, getting leary and tail happy if you were heavy with the right foot,the GTO never did.It had supportive black leather sports seats upfront and two smallish seats at the back,ok for young children but too small for adults.Performance is excellent,0-60 comes up in under 6 secs and I think the UK model is limited to 155mph,more than fast enough! Japanese imports do have a speed limiter that cuts in at 112mph,not that this matters unless youre going to go racing around on a track day out.The electronic limiters can be removed by a specialist garage,the standard car has 286 BHP but these are sometimes tuned to alot more by aftermarket superchippers,having upto 400 BHP .Mine was very well equipped having leather seats that were electric upfront,electric windows,airconditioning system,power steering,ABS brakes,driver & passenger airbags,premium sound system having stacking CD player and radio.Easy car to live with,my local Mitsubishi dealer was great,serviced it for me no problem and very similar mechanically to the last generation UK 3000GT and it needed nothing extra appart from oil and coolant.Service intervals were about 10,000 / 12,000 miles in one of these very good for a high performance car.I was warned by a Japanese friend who worked in the autotrade that these are not so reliable as the Supra,the Mitsubishi turbos were not as reliable long term and very expensive to fix.If you start up and allow it to gently warm up before setting off and then when you stop let it tick over for a minute and let the fans do the cooling gradually.Sudden drops/increases in temperature really do cause damage on all these twin turbo models,thats why you often find Japanese imports have a turbo timer that keeps the car running for a set time after switching off the ignition.I have never seen this on a UK model,Japanese imports do tend to get alot of extras.Mine was just a second car but could easily be used as an every day driver.My wife loved it,very safe and easy to drive but a little difficult to see out of from behind when parking.She used this car alot and even with the poor visibility at the back she would manage to park it ok as the powersteering was light at low manouvering speed.Insurance is a consideration,group 20 means very expensive.Mpg was only around 18-22 mpg,not bad for a twinturbo heavy weight 4wd you pay the price! Not too common a sight so I would consider another good one of these,low miles best sub 60K miles if possible with plenty of service history,UK example may be worth paying a little more for.Prices very good now and should be able to find a UK supplied one sub �7/8K,a Japanese Import for around �5K,dont buy auto or non turbo as you may be disappointed,too slow,6 speed GTO MR model or UK car best.Look out for the SR Twinturbo,this I believe is a cheaper Japanese Import that does not have electronic suspension or 4ws,it may not say this on the logbook so check the chassis number and do some homework before buying.(Car pictured is the identical model to the one I owned,the Japanese Mitsubishi GTO MR) Thanks for reading my review and I hope you found it interesting.If this has been useful to you and you take time to leave Your rating it will be appreciated and hope you will take a look at my other reviews sometime.I also leave reviews on the DooYoo website about this and other items,many thanks! ...less petrolheadguru 19.06.2010 (12.07.2010) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of Mitsubishi 3000 GT Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Lots of pace, not much space Advantages: Very quick,fantastic handlingDisadvantages: Expensive and thirsty ...the chance to aquire a Mitsubishi 3000GT, a car I had always admired and desired.Resplendant in red the bodywork belied the fact that it had covered 160,000 miles.The black leather interior, however, had not fared so well, the drivers seat being ripped on the bolster.I knew the car well as it had belonged to my wife's boss for quite a while, and had been trouble free.The fact that it did not have a full service history was a concern, but as I was ......prepared to take a chance.It had just had a gearbox re-build at �1200, and a new water pump and starter motor, so they were OK at least. The 3000GT is very advanced, having 4WD, 4WS,active-aero and multi-channel ABS. It is also quite powerful having 280BHP from a 24 valve, twin-turbo V6 3 litre motor, quite potent, but not exceptional by todays standards. On the way back from picking it up, I hit 158 mph on the highway, bone stock N/A 5 speed. If you like the way this car looks, you'll like driving it just as much. It's comfortable, even for a tall driver. (I'm 6'2" 185cm) There are a lot of electronic gadgets, and more on the turbo than the non, and these can keep you busy with minor repairs if you insist that they all work. In general, I'd recommend it to the DIY owner who can handle auto repairs. ......is relatively simple, particularly if one invests in a Palm Pilot and diagnosis software, which plugs into the diagnostic connector on model years except 94 & 95. A model for American buyers, but have been bought in Europe and used there. Of course it's a bit of expensive, but if you can afford &10000, so you can afford some money on maintaining this beast. It's fuel consumption is about 12l for 1000km, and fine speed is 200km/h with no difficulties. Of course if rules and highways allow such speed. I recomend you to change all the defective parts immidiatly, and with only ......for me it's was a pain to order Japanese parts through Austria. And one wheel cost me $250. It's equipped with ClimateControl and computer processing for Engine. And GDI shows it's best. AirBag, CruiseControl and 6-shifted transmission. On the Light-Stop it's easy to blow out all others. It was named after an eighteenth century English racehorse which won 26 races,[1] and has also been sold as the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser captive imports through Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with the Chrysler Corporation. Four trim levels were available: the bottom three were front wheel drive and the very top was all wheel drive. The top FWD and the AWD model were equipped with turbocharged engines. The car underwent minor changes throughout its production; 1992–1994 models (1Gb) have updated sheetmetal and are easily distinguishable from previous vehicles (1Ga). The most notable of these changes is that the 1Ga models have pop-up headlights. The Eclipse was revised into a new vehicle for 1995 (described below in the 2G section). These models varied significantly in drivetrains and available options, and included some variance in appearance, as higher trim lines added different front and rear fascia panels and surrounding trim, with the GSX model getting a notably different styling package than the others. [edit] Drivetrain The basic driveline layout of the Eclipse is a transverse-mounted 4-cylinder Mitsubishi 4G37 or 4G63 engine situated on the left-hand side of the car driving an automatic or manual transmission on the right-hand side. AWD models have a different transmission which includes a limited-slip center differential and output shaft for a transfer case, which drives the rear differential (also available as limited-slip) and half-shafts. The 4G37 and 4G63 engines are both I4 gasoline engines. The 4G63 is composed of an iron engine block and aluminum cylinder head and is equipped with balance shafts for smooth operation. The turbocharged version of the 4G63 (sometimes referred to as the 4G63T) is equipped with a lower compression ratio (7.8 vs. 9.0 in the naturally aspirated version) and oil squirters under the pistons in order to better cope with the stress and extra heat caused by forced induction. There is also a difference between rear axle/rear ends on all wheel drive models. 1990-early 1992 cars have three bolts attaching the axle to the wheel hub. New to the line was a convertible model, the Spyder, introduced in 1996. The convertible was available in two trims: the GS and the GS-T. The first is powered by the non-turbo 4G64 engine, and the latter by the turbo 4G63 (turbo) and GSX (all-wheel-drive) hardtop models. There was no convertible model powered by the Chrysler 420a. The turbocharged engine option continued as the 4G63, but was modified for more power as compared to the previous generation (210 hp vs 195 hp). The non-turbo engine had two different engines depending on the market they were produced for. The US version engines were producing 140 hp, found only in the hardtop RS and GS trims, was a modified version of the Chrysler Neon engine, manufactured by Chrysler and delivered to and installed at the Diamond Star Motors facility. The Europe version engines were naturally aspirated 4G63 with 141 hp. From 96-99 the GS Spyder's were mated with the 4g64(2.4L) naturally-aspirated engine provided by Mitsubishi. The Talon was discontinued in 1998 along with the rest of the Eagle line because lack of sales in earlier years, leaving only the Eclipse for sale during the 1999 model year. The front grille opening was given a more aggressive profile. The headlights were given a sharper slant on the inner edges, and the previous all-chrome fixture interior changed to a black interior with chrome reflector inserts. The driving lights were revised from a reflector type to a smaller projection type. The rear bumper cap was altered and had the reverse lights restyled and moved out into the bumper fascia, away from their original central position by the license plate bracket. The interior color choices also changed from blue, and grey in 1995-1996 model years to black/grey, tan/black, and grey in the 1997-1999 model years. The black leather interior option was only available in 1999; the package included all seats (with the 'mitsubishi' logo embroidered on both of the fronts), door inserts, and center console armrest. A special version of the Eclipse, called the "GS Tenth Anniversary Edition", was sold at the end of the 1999 model run with unique 16-inch wheels supplied to Mitsubishi by OZ Racing. It also included the leather interior package, accented exhaust exit, and hoop-style spoiler that were normally offered on some turbocharged models. The special edition package was only offered with the 420A engine. A unique version of the 2G Eclipse sold in some European countries. It used a normally-aspirated Mitsubishi 4G63 motor, similar to what was available in the 1G, unique sideview mirrors, and unique amber rear turn signals. The Talon was available in four trim levels: Base, ESi, TSi and TSi AWD. The Eagle Talon saw its production end in 1998 when Chrysler shut down the Eagle sub-brand, although the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring continued to be sold in variations that used the 420A engine and many of the 2G Eclipse/Talon interior components. [edit] Drivetrain The basic driveline layout of the Eclipse is a transverse-mounted 4-cylinder Chrysler 420A, Mitsubishi 4G64 or 4G63 engine. The Mitsubishi motors are mounted in the same orientation as for the 1G cars. The 420A-powered cars had the engine mounted on the right side of the car,and further back in the chassis. AWD models had a similar transmission to the 1G car. The 2G GSX also had a stronger carrier/differential when equipped with the limited slip option. [edit] Engine All motors are 4-cylinder gasoline engines. All have iron blocks with aluminum cylinder heads. The 4G63/4G64 engines retain the balance shafts for smoother operation, while the 420A does not use them. The 1995-1999 turbo engines were given an increased compression ratio of 8.5:1, up from 7.8:1, and a smaller turbo, a Garrett T25 in place of the previous Mitsubishi TD04-13G (automatic cars) and TD05-14B (manual cars). This was done to minimize turbo lag, which was an undesirable trait for mass-market appeal in the U.S. The 4G63 engines found in 1990-1994 models have a 60 mm throttle body compared to the 1995-1999 MY's 52 mm. The intake ports on the head and runners of the intake manifold are also larger. They also have larger crankshaft bearing journals to allow better lubrication. The first-generation 4G63 head with its larger intake ports appears to offer better performance potential than the second-generation head due to its increased flow capacity in stock form. However, the second-generation head can be ported to increase the size of its intake ports similar to that of the first-generation head. Furthermore, the smaller ports provide greater velocity which aids in cylinder filling, and thus, as is the case with any head porting, port size is a compromise between air flow and air velocity. It was the first concept vehicle exhibited by Mitsubishi at an auto show in the U.S.[3] The 4G63 was replaced by two powertrain options, a 147 hp 2.4 L 16-valve SOHC 4-cylinder 4G64 and a 205 hp 24v SOHC 3.0 L V6 (6G72). AWD was no longer an option. The suspension setup was adjusted to provide a softer and more compliant ride quality. No longer considered to be a DSM, it shared its platform and powertrain with the 8th generation Galant. Weight was also up slightly from the previous year's model. In late 2001, power was lowered to 200 hp (150 kW) as a result of tightened emission standards forcing MMNA to adopt the California standards for all variants of the car. In mid-2002, the GTS trim was introduced for the 2003 model year. This vehicle included an engine with a 10:1 compression ratio and an improved Mitsubishi Variable Induction Management (MVIM) air intake system that gave the car an extra 10 hp (7.5 kW) and a slightly improved power curve. The 2003-2005 GTS and GT/GTS Spyder shared the new engine while GT models retained the 200 hp (150 kW) powertrain. From 2003-2005, the Eclipse Spyder V6 was sold in a left-hand drive version in Japan. The Fed Spec GT is most recognizable for having one catalytic converter (cat) and two O2 sensors, with one sensor before the cat and the other after. Cali Spec: Cali Specs in 2000 were primarily shipped to California because of the more stringent emission laws; although other areas of North America received them as well. The Eclipse GT line was switched over for cost reasons to the Cali Spec, so only one version of the GT would be manufactured. Cali Specs came with 5 hp (3.7 kW) less and 5 ft·lbf (6.8 N·m) less. [edit] 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse EV The Mitsubishi Eclipse EV is a prototype electric vehicle with a lightweight electric motor and lithium-ion batteries in the chassis of a third generation Eclipse. It is powered by manganese lithium-ion batteries made by Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd. which have 65% reduced charging time over nickel-hydrogen batteries. It participated in the 2001 Shikoku EV Rally, a 780 km circuit around the perimeter of Shikoku, Japan, where it drove in excess of 400 km on a single battery charge. Wind Deflector [edit] 2009 facelift 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse The Mitsubishi Eclipse was given a minor facelift for the 2009 model year, adding optional dual exhaust and projector H.I.D. headlamps. The V6 engine now rated at 265 hp and 262 lb-ft torque.[5] It was unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. [edit] 2011 Facelift The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse now features a "blackout" roof, similar to the 1990 version.
