Even those that dont handle like vans feel like them to park. For many families, the seven-seater Mitsubishi Space Wagon has proved to be a refreshing alternative. Its car-like to drive, to look at and to park, it has Mitsubishi reliability and its been on the market long enough for early examples to be very affordable. At first glance, it`s difficult to believe that the second generation Space Wagon can actually seat seven, it looks so much smaller than the competition. Mitsubishi squeezed in that extra row of seats by raising the roofline and adopting a more upright seating layout. If that doesn`t sound very comfortable, you might be surprised at how much you like it in practice. For most journeys, you`ll probably want to keep the rearmost seats folded down (giving you a huge boot); theyre easy to raise when circumstances demand. The specification is comprehensive, even if you don`t buy a Diamond Option Pack version with electric sunroof, roof rails and a luggage cover. The clever touches please like the useful drinks holders and the tray under the front passenger seat. In latest third generation form, the Space Wagon trumps its predecessor with an even more versatile interior and an advanced 2.4-litre GDi petrol engine thats powerful yet so economical that it does away with the need for a diesel. Though you cant remove the middle row completely, you can fold it flat (to create a table) or forward (to maximise cargo space if you need a van). The two third-row seats can be removed, creating up to 1,930 litres of luggage space. Alternatively, they too can be folded forward. Everything you need is in there, including a central black and white LCD screen for time, temperature, fuel consumption and stereo. Find a Space Wagon with the optional satellite navigation and it displays route directions, too. Twin front airbags are standard and GLS customers get side airbags. Only the GL does without anti-lock brakes.Early 92J-plate 1.8-litre second generation Space Wagons cost from around £1,000 with K-plated 2.0-litre models from £1,500. The Diamond Option Pack automatic models (96P-plate onwards) are worth from £3,525 to £4,375 (99T). The rare turbo diesel (M or N-plate) is worth between £2,000 and £3,000. Equivalent Space Runners meanwhile, begin at around £800 for the earliest 92J plates with more typical 97P-platers from under £2,350, and later 99T-platers from around £2,900. The latest 2.4-litre GDI Space Wagon models are pretty rare but you should be able to track down a 99T GL for about £5,200 or a better equipped GLX for about £300 more. Another £300 should secure a GLX automatic and the GLS (auto only) is about £6,000.You need a full service history on these, as maintenance can be expensive and parts pricey. Check for school run knocks and signs of family abuse in the interior. Otherwise, build quality is good and the engines will go round the clock with care.(approx based on a 1996 2.0GLS - ex Vat) A clutch assembly is around £300 and an exhaust system about £400. Front and rear brake pads will be in the vicinity of £35 a set. A radiator is about £200, an alternator about £130, a starter motor £130, and a replacement headlamp about £100. Car-like is a phrase Mitsubishi like to emphasise when referring to the Space Wagon. In contrast to the bulky crew bus approach of most of the competition, it requires far less familiarisation time for drivers unused to such vehicles. However, you still get the lofty driving position that improves visibility so much. The Mitsubishi's easy to manoeuvre; at the wheel of an Espace or a Previa, you feel a little like you`re piloting a bus, particularly in tight supermarket carparks. In contrast, the Space Wagon is no longer than, say, a Ford Focus Estate and feels it. You should like the willing response of the sixteen valve engines fitted to most generation Wagons. And performance? Well, rest to sixty takes around 10 seconds on the way to a maximum of up to 115mph and you should get up to 38 miles per gallon. In summary, if your objective is to move people as comfortably and as economically as possible, you can`t afford to leave a Space Wagon off your shopping list. It will maintain the RVR name for Canada. It is based on the design of the Concept-cX prototype first exhibited at the 62nd Frankfurt Motor Show in July 2007.[1][3][4] It was also exhibited at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in September the same year.[5] Mitsubishi ASX The Asian RVRs are powered by the 4B10 1.8 litre gasoline engine mated to an INVECS-III continuously variable transmission.[6] North American, Singaporean, Chinese, Malaysian, Philippine and Australian vehicles will get the larger 4B11 2.0 L, while the European ASX will use a new 4A92 1.6 litre gasoline engine. In Europe and also Australia while be avalaible the 4N13 1.8 L direct-injection turbodiesel engine.[7] The whole range of petrol engines - volume 1.6 l (capacity of 117 hp), 1.8 l (140 hp) and 2.0 (150 hp) will be offered in the Russian and Ukrainian market. A front drive vehicle with the engine of 1.6 l will be equipped with mechanical transmission and with the engine of 1.8 l and 2.0 l in the all-wheel drive version – with a variable speed case with Sports mode. Mitsubishi has concentrated on emphasizing the RVR's fuel economy and low emissions, as part of the company's plan to reposition itself as a maker of smaller and more efficient cars, in contrast to its previous successes building large SUVs.[8] The vehicle is both eligible for an eco-car tax reduction in Japan,[6] and Euro-5 compliant in Europe.[8] The European ASX will be exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010,[7][8] while the North American Outlander Sport will make its debut at the 2010 New York International Auto Show. I am the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Space Star Equippe 5dr, the car reg is of 2003 I have had it since that year and so far all that it has required maintenance was a couple of tires that I got punctures on, people that ride in it advised me that the car is very quiet, however it does have some noise when on the motorway when is going very fast, this is due to it's shape as is a tall car and therefore has more wind resistance. Overall is a nice car as is small enough for town yet big enough for longer trip and consumption is low. I do have a small complaint it does have a little body roll when doing tight turns, which means it leans quite a bit when doing these tight turns, but understandably so due to it's height. Comfortable.Disadvantages: Not quite enough space. We have had our Space Wagon for just over a year now, bought second hand in January 2006 for £1600. Car is M Reg. Comfortable seating, fairly spacious seating, could do with a little more space, especially the back seats and boot space is a little too small for me. Boot space is not big enough when the car is full of passengers i.e. cannot go food shopping with all the children as there will be no room to put shopping, Holds the road well. 150000 on the clock and is still going well. Hardly any rust on the car after all this time and not kept in a garage either. Have had to have work carried out on steering, but you would expect this with the age of the vehicle. Advantages: Dependability, roadholding, engine, fuel consumption.Disadvantages: It's appetite for brake parts. covered by Mitsubishi. The thing worked like a dream, doing what we wanted it to do and returning an indicated 50 - 55 MPG, up to 65mpg on a long motorway run at constant speeds. In the 3 years I went through a set of front tyres and little else. No great wear on the back end, and no little niggles. It was on the final service of the 3 year term that I had to have the front discs and pads replaced. No warning really, just replace the things. The following year the rear pads/discs had to be changed out along with the rear tyres. Since then I've been getting discs/pads changed annually at alternate ends (Each set lasting 2 years, or about 20k per set). This thing rattles through brake consumables like a kid in a sweetshop! Year five saw us returning from a trip to the Isle of Skye when the main turbo outlet pipe cracked.
